Luciano Buonfiglio is the new President of CONI

On 26 June 2025, the 309th National Council of CONI, gathered at the "Giulio Onesti" Olympic Preparation Centre in Rome, elected **Luciano Buonfiglio** as the new President of the Italian National Olympic Committee for the 2025-2028 Olympic term. Buonfiglio obtained **47 votes**, beating the other candidates Luca Pancalli (34 votes), Pierluigi Giancamilli, Carlo Iannelli, Franco Carraro and Mauro Checcoli. He succeeds Giovanni Malagò, who had led the institution since 2013. ## A canoeist at the helm of Italian sport Born in Naples on 15 November 1950, Luciano Buonfiglio is the **first Neapolitan in CONI history** and the first president to have taken part as an athlete in an Olympic Games: he competed in the K-4 1000 metres sprint canoe event at the Montreal 1976 Games. An experienced sports executive, he has been **president of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation since 2005** and has held important roles internationally, including treasurer of the International Canoe Federation. ## The new Junta The National Junta appointed **Diana Bianchedi** (first Vice President) **and Marco Di Paola** as Vice Presidents, confirming **Carlo Mornati** as Secretary General. ## What it means for the Swiss delegation The election of the new President opens the Olympic term that will culminate with the Los Angeles 2028 Games, passing through the home event of **Milano-Cortina 2026**. In the renewal of mandates decided by the new Junta, the Swiss delegation of CONI saw **Dr Cirano Tondi confirmed** as Foreign Delegate for Switzerland, ensuring continuity in promoting sport among young Italian-Swiss generations.
