Luciano Buonfiglio
Luciano Buonfiglio leads the Italian National Olympic Committee for the 2025-2028 Olympic term.
Who he is
Born in Naples on 15 November 1950, Luciano Buonfiglio was elected President of CONI on 26 June 2025, with 47 votes, by the 309th National Council. He is the first Neapolitan in the institution’s history and the first president to have taken part as an athlete in an Olympic Games: in the K-4 1000 metres sprint canoe event at the Montreal 1976 Games.
An experienced sports executive, he has been president of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation since 2005 and has held important international roles. He succeeds Giovanni Malagò, who led CONI from 2013.
The President’s message
In his first year at the helm of CONI, Buonfiglio focused on consolidating the model of Italian sport and the institution’s central role, strengthening dialogue with the Government, Parliament and the IOC.
The year was marked by the success of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, with a historic record of 30 medals for Team Italia.
Strong attention to athletes and their dual careers, with programmes such as “Now to Next”, and to the educational and cultural values of sport, on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The National Junta
The National Junta appointed Diana Bianchedi (first Vice President) and Marco Di Paola as Vice Presidents, confirming Carlo Mornati as Secretary General.
What it means for the Swiss delegation
In the renewal of mandates, the Swiss delegation of CONI saw Dr Cirano Tondi confirmed as Foreign Delegate for Switzerland, ensuring continuity in promoting sport.
