What CONI is
The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) is the governing body of sport in Italy. Recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), it coordinates and regulates national sporting activity as the confederation of all the National Sports Federations, Associated Sports Disciplines and Sports Promotion Bodies.
It is a public entity operating under state supervision while retaining the autonomy required by the Olympic Charter. It oversees the preparation of athletes and ensures their participation in the Olympic Games, while promoting the spread of sport at every level.
History and headquarters
Founded in 1914, since 1951 CONI has been headquartered at Palazzo H in the Foro Italico in Rome, the large sports complex that also houses the Olympic Stadium and the historic Stadio dei Marmi, where major youth sports events take place every year.
How it is organised
CONI’s main bodies are the President, the National Junta and the National Council. Since 26 June 2025 the President has been Luciano Buonfiglio, elected for the 2025-2028 Olympic term.
CONI around the world
Through its Foreign Delegates, CONI is present in the main countries of Italian emigration to promote sporting culture and practice among Italian communities abroad. Switzerland is one of these countries: the Swiss delegation of CONI brings the values of Italian sport to Italian-Swiss families and young athletes.
